Nessy's Note

Matcha-flavored anything has become super popular in the last few years. And in my experience, you either love it or you don't. Personally? I'm team matcha all the way.

Beyond sipping a warm cup, I've been using matcha in all sorts of fun ways- including adding it into my breakfast yogurt bowl or making a banana matcha smoothie.

Its earthy flavor pairs surprisingly well with the creamy yogurt and a touch of honey and makes the perfect base to your favorite toppings.

Ingredients and Substitutions

Yogurt and matcha measured out in measuring spoons.
  • Greek Yogurt- I recommend using whole milk or 2% for the best flavor and creaminess but non-fat will work if that's what you prefer.
    • Substitution: Any unsweetened yogurt (balkan, skyr, etc.) works but the protein content and thickness will vary.
  • Matcha Powder- You can't make a matcha bowl without it! Choose a high quality matcha that you enjoy for best results (plus then you'll have it on hand to make a matcha protein smoothie!).
  • Honey- Matcha is a little bitter on its own so honey helps to balance it.
    • Substitutions: Maple syrup or your sweetener of choice can be used instead.
  • Vanilla Extract- Just a little bit of vanilla takes this bowl to the next level of delicious. You can leave it out if needed, though.
  • Fine Sea Salt (optional)- I find that a pinch balances the flavor.
  • Toppings- And now the fun part! I love pairing matcha with banana or berries plus some roasted almonds and pepitas but whatever you like works. I have dozens of topping ideas in my complete guide to Greek yogurt breakfast bowls.

My Tips for the Best Matcha Yogurt Bowl

  • Use a quality matcha. Since the matcha is the key flavor component of the bowl, the better the matcha, the better the bowl will be.
  • Don't be afraid to experiment with toppings. Matcha pairs deliciously with a range of fruit, nuts and seeds. Try different combos until you find your favorite. My favorite is the combo included in the recipe card!
